TRANSPORT CANADA
INFORMATION FOR PASSENGERS TRAVELLING
BY AIR TO, FROM, OR WITHIN THE UNITED STATES

On April 14, 2005, the United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) begins enforcing changes to its list of prohibited items on board aircraft. These changes prohibit all lighters from being brought on board an aircraft flying to, from, or within the U.S., and from being carried past security checkpoints at U.S. airports.

Transport Canada is currently working with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) and with aviation industry partners to determine the appropriate Canadian response to this requirement, including assessing the need for similar requirements in Canada.

In the interim, U.S.-bound passengers are strongly encouraged to avoid bringing lighters to the airport on their person or in their carry-on baggage, as the TSA will dispose of lighters brought to checkpoints at U.S. airports.

Passengers are also reminded that both Transport Canada and U.S. Department of Transportation regulations prohibit all lighters from being stowed in checked baggage.

For more detailed information on Canada’s prohibited items on board aircraft and dangerous goods, please visit Transport Canada’s website at www.tc.gc.ca or CATSA’s website at www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca.
