CATSA Purchases Advanced Explosives Detection Systems and Security Equipment for Use at Canadian Airports

OTTAWA, June 17 - Brian Flemming, Chairman of the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), today announced the purchase of $50 million in advanced explosives detection systems (EDS) and related state-of-the-art electronic security equipment for deployment at Canadian airports.

"CATSA is in the process of completing a program initiated by Transport Canada and the aviation industry," said Mr. Flemming. "This additional equipment will help us ensure that the traveling public within Canada continues to enjoy the highest degree of safety and security."

Transport Canada will be completing its initial deployment of explosives detection systems totaling $55 million in June 2002. CATSA will continue full deployment of EDS to all 89 designated airports in Canada, which will encompass this additional $50 million purchase of EDS equipment to be delivered this year.

Explosives detection systems (EDS) generally comprise several components, including X-rays that identify baggage contents, and trace detection that detects residues of explosive material. The new, state-of-the-art equipment will be used for screening both carry-on and checked baggage.

CATSA is a Crown corporation that was created by Parliament in April 2002, to assume responsibility for certain aviation security services. One of the Authority's key security responsibilities involves the acquisition, deployment, maintenance, and operation of explosives detection systems, as well as conventional pre-board screening equipment at airports.

Mr. Flemming added that CATSA is committed to implementing the appropriate technology, policies and processes to meet modern security challenges. "Our goal is to maintain one of the safest and most secure air transportation systems in the world. We look forward to working with Transport Canada and our aviation industry partners to provide such a system," he said.
