CATSA Welcomes Auditor General's Report: Security Still Job One

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) has taken steps to improve its effectiveness and resolve issues raised by the Auditor General in her report tabled in Parliament on April 5, 2005.

CATSA views security as its top priority, and welcomes any input that helps the authority to do its job better. In a letter to CATSA's security partners, President and CEO Jacques Duchesneau said that the authority had responded to the Auditor General's concerns as they were raised during her audit.

CATSA is already working closely with Transport Canada to develop performance measures, as recommended by the Auditor General. CATSA already measures its effectiveness, efficiency and quality of customer service and believes its performance on these indicators is steadily improving.

The Auditor General also drew CATSA's attention to issues in its relationship with Transport Canada, the federal department that sets policy for all aspects of air transport security. CATSA has improved its internal procedures to ensure that every compliance letter receives a reply, and that action plans are implemented immediately when necessary.

The Auditor General noted CATSA's good performance in key security responsibilities, including measures taken to screen checked baggage and to detect explosives.

CATSA works continuously to improve air security so passengers can fly with confidence and peace of mind.

A Crown corporation based in the National Capital Region, CATSA reports to Parliament through the Minister of Transport and is responsible for delivering consistent, effective and highly professional service to ensure the security and safety of air transport in Canada. CATSA is committed to ensuring the integrity of the security system through continuous improvement of its procedures, screening equipment and training program.
