CATSA Awards new Security Screening Contract at Calgary Airport

OTTAWA - The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) today announced the awarding of a new contract to a subsidiary of Garda World Security Corporation (Riscon Services Limited) for security screening at Calgary International Airport. The contract is effective April 1, 2006 through March 31, 2007 for an amount not to exceed $13,937,000.00.

"CATSA conducted a rigorous competitive process and a thorough evaluation based on a list of mandatory and rated requirements. The results of an objective scoring system awarded Garda the highest score among all the competing bids," said Michael McLaughlin, CATSA's Chief Financial Officer.

CATSA issued a Request for Proposals (RFPs) in December 2005. Four firms submitted bids which were evaluated based on specific criteria, including: the firms' experience, expertise, knowledge, methodology, as well as the cost of service delivery.

"This contract demonstrates CATSA's continued commitment to delivering the highest degree of security and customer service to the traveling public," added McLaughlin.

The duration of the contract is one full year, with options for two one-year extensions. Garda will become the direct employer of 260 screening officers at Canada's fourth largest airport.

The screening officers are responsible for pre-board screening of passengers and their belongings. The screening officers also screen airport workers who require access to restricted areas.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) is a Crown corporation reporting to Parliament through the Minister of Transport. CATSA is responsible for delivering consistent, effective service to ensure the security and safety of air transport in Canada. CATSA is committed to ensuring the integrity of the security system through continuous improvement of its procedures, screening equipment and training programs.
