Counterfeit extension cords pose fire hazard
Wednesday, September 13, 2006 | 01:54 PM ET
About 42,000 counterfeit extension cords are being recalled because they pose a fire risk to consumers, said the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The brown and white extension cords, imported by Pride Products Corp., of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., have been fitted with undersized wiring. They are also lacking a fuse in the cord to provide over-current protection.
The cords were sold at local discount, drug and grocery stores across the U.S. from June 2005 through August 2006 for between $1 and $2.
Consumers should stop using the cords immediately and return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
The CPSC has not received any reports of incidents or injury.
