Other potential bidders reportedly include: Dubai Holdings, the investment arm of the Dubai government; Steve Morgan, a local businessman who already owns a five per cent stake in the soccer franchise; New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft; and Juan Villalonga, a Spanish businessman.

Gillett, whose holdings include ski resorts, golf courses, auto dealerships and meat packing plants, held a 22 per cent stake in the Miami Dolphins in 1966, briefly serving as general manager, and owned the Harlem Globetrotters from 1967 to 1978.

The Colorado-based tycoon bought a majority stake (80 per cent) in the Canadiens as well as the Bell Centre from Molson Inc. for $275 million on Jan. 31, 2001.
