Community Futures Development Corporations

The Community Futures Program and the Community Futures Development Corporations support communities and businesses to achieve long term employment stability, growth, and adjustment.

Individual communities or groups of communities that make up a labour market area.

Summary

The Department of Economic Development & Transportation provides funding to Community Futures Development Corporation's (CFDC's) through this program.  Funding to CFDC's allows communities in need to be the innovators, leaders, and directors in solving their long-term employment problems.

Each CFDC is an incorporated, non-profit body run by an independent board of directors.

CFDCs perform three major roles:

1. Provide development and expansion capital through loans or loan guarantees to viable businesses that are unsuccessful in getting adequate financing elsewhere.

2. Provide technical advice and counseling to new or existing small businesses within the community.

3. Provide assistance with a range of other community development initiatives such as community based economic planning, training, etc..

The board of directors of the CFDC's are responsible for assessing, approving, or rejecting applications for investment funds and for all the overall direction of the technical advisory service operated by the CFDC.
