Stock
Assessment
Fisheries research and population studies form the core
of stock assessment work at the Pacific Biological Station.
Salmon, invertebrate, groundfish, pelagic fish, marine mammal, conservation biology and applied technology
programs are conducted annually. Activities include: coast-wide biosampling (length, weight, sex, maturity, age)
of commercial and non-commercial species, fishing vessel logbook, at-sea observer and tagging programs,
marine-freshwater fishing, diving, plankton and hydroacoustic surveys, species enumerations, fecundity and
age determinations, growth, stomach content, catch-age and maturity analyses, morphometrics, meristics and stock
identification, statistical and geographical analyses, mortality estimations and forecasting,
multi-species stock assessments and fisheries population modelling.
Stock assessments are structured toward the development and application of pertinent biological and ecological knowledge and
understanding necessary for sustainable resource utilization.

Note: Salmon and
invertebrate research and assessment programs
are represented on Fisheries Management
