Lobster Fishery Violations In Lobster Fishing Area (LFA) 23

October 6, 2006

TRACADIE-SHEILA, N.B. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Gulf Region, reported that Mr Christopher Pictou of Eel River Bar First Nation in New Brunswick and F & G Fish Market of Dalhousie, pleaded guilty in Provincial Court in Dalhousie, on September 27, 2006, to lobster fishery violations, contrary to subsection 35(2) of the Fishery (General) Regulations.

Judge Pierre Dubé of the Provincial Court fined Mr Pictou $2,000 and F & G Fish Market $5,000 for having sold or offered for sale, lobster caught under a communal licence for a subsistence fishery that prohibits the sale, purchase, or offer for sale, the caught product.

Fishery officers from the Dalhousie and Beresford Detachments investigated the illegal activities that led to charges being laid in this case. During the investigation, fishery officers observed Mr Pictou transporting his lobster catches to F & G Fish Market. A few days later, fishery officers saw a truck from Quebec at F & G Fish Market loading product boxes. When the truck was stopped on the highway, the officers found lobsters from Mr Pictou’s traps. Other lobsters from Mr Pictou’s traps were found displayed for sale at F & G Fish Market.

DFO is concerned about the conservation and protection of the lobster resource in LFA 23 and in the southern Gulf. The Department is encouraging the public to report all suspicious fishing activities to a local fishery officer or to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
