Poachers caught jigging near salmon ladder

august 17, 2006

CORNER BROOK, NL – Clint Bridger, a resident of Deer Lake, was convicted in Corner Brook Provincial Court on June 23, 2006, of illegal salmon fishing near a salmon ladder on the Lomond River, Bonne Bay.

Three fishery guardians from the Rocky Harbour Detachment were conducting a stakeout in the area on August 27, 2005, and observed Mr. Bridger and a second individual attempting to illegally jig salmon near the ladder. Under the Fisheries Act, any manner of fishing is prohibited within 23 meters downstream from the lower entrance to any fish-way, canal, obstacle or leap.

Mr. Bridger was fined a total of $500, and until his fines are paid, denied an angling licence and ordered to stay away from inland waters.

Proceedings against a second individual charged in the incident have not concluded.

Poaching is a serious threat to salmon stocks. Poachers disregard regulations and the efforts of community stewardship groups to protect and rebuild salmon stocks.
