Marine Environmental Quality Home Page
Marine Environmental Quality (MEQ) refers to
the status and trends of physical, chemical and biological conditions in the marine
environment, and in some instances to the social and economic well-being of maritime
people. One of the primary objectives of MEQ is to provide support and feedback to
Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Integrated Management (IM) and Marine
Protected Areas (MPA) programs. MEQ information will better allow
scientists to understand the current status and future forecasts of ecosystem health for
IM initiatives and MPA pilot projects, and in turn provide advice for ecosystem-based
planners, decision-makers, and local communities. The MEQ program encompasses the
research, monitoring, and reporting of coastal, estuarine, and offshore areas to detect
signs of declining or improving health, and will be used as a predictive tool in assessing
effects and taking mitigative action.
