Fined for fishing cod during illegal protest fishery

Harbour Grace – A Hopedale, Labrador man has been convicted of fishing cod recreationally during a closed time.

On Saturday morning, July 30, 2005, fishery officers from the Bay Roberts Detachment were conducting a vessel patrol in Conception Bay in response to a planned illegal protest cod fishery that was publicly promoted for that day.

Near the community of Conception Harbour, fishery officers observed and videotaped two men catch and retain Atlantic cod while fishing with handlines from an open boat.

During the investigation, Mr. Hans Flowers of Hopedale, Labrador, caught and retained one Atlantic cod in the presence of the fishery officers and it was also determined that he had caught and retained one other cod prior to the inspection.

Mr. Flowers pled guilty in Harbour Grace Provincial Court on May 5, 2006, of fishing recreationally for cod during a closed time and was fined $300.

A second man involved in the incident is scheduled to appear in provincial court in October 2006.
