What is Hydrography?
According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, hydrography is the science
dealing with all of the waters of the earth's surface, including the description
of
their physical features and conditions; the preparation of charts showing
the positions of lakes, rivers, seas, the contours of the sea bottoms,
the position of shallows, deeps, reefs, and the direction and volume,
configuration, motion, and condition of all waters of the earth.
There is an easier way to explain it. Hydro means water, and grapher
means a person who draws. A hydrographer measures the depths of lakes,
rivers, and oceans. Therefore the science of hydrography is the measurement
and description of the waters on the surface of the earth in the form
of a chart and related publications.
Surveying is an age-old art of collecting and collating soundings (measuring
water depths) and other data which are used to make charts and other navigational
aids used by seafarers. The most basic operation of hydrography is the
taking of soundings.
