Quality habitats are essential for supporting the populations of marine and freshwater fish species that sustain fisheries. Since fish habitat can be damaged or even destroyed by human activities in the water, it is important to protect such habitat.

Fish Habitat Management Program

The mandate of the Fish Habitat Management Program is to conserve and protect fish habitat with a view to ensuring the sustainability of Canada's marine and freshwater fisheries resources. In pursuit of this goal, Fisheries and Oceans Canada takes measures to enforce the provisions of the Fisheries Act pertaining to the protection of fish habitat. The Department's Policy for the Management of Fish Habitat provides a framework for the uniform administration of the program Canada-wide.

In Quebec, the Fish Habitat Management Program:

  • reviews projects that are likely to have adverse impacts on fish habitat
  • supports initiatives for the conservation, restoration and development of habitat by encouraging community involvement
  • develops tools for fish habitat management, including a geomatics database.
