SAREX Ocean Guardian
Introduction:
The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) will join with a host of other agencies to test their emergency response preparedness in a training exercise called ‘SAREX Ocean Guardian.’
The training exercise will begin at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 25, 2004 and will end at 4:30 p.m. that day.
The Search and Rescue Exercise or ‘SAREX’ presents the participants with a realistic search and rescue scenario to which they must respond as they would in a real situation.
To make sure the exercise presents a challenge, the participants are kept in the dark about most of the details of the incident and are given updates as the exercise evolves.
Objectives:
The key objectives of the exercise are to test the existing emergency response plans of the agencies involved, and test SAR co-ordination and response capabilities between Canada and France for the waters surrounding St. Pierre et Miquelon.
The exercise is also a training tool for professional and volunteer SAR providers.
Maritime and aeronautical search and rescue staff, through observation of all aspects of the exercise, will critique the operational readiness and capabilities of the search and rescue units under their jurisdiction.
Participants:
The following personnel and agencies will take part in this exercise:
- Canadian Coast Guard
- Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA)
- Services Des Affaires Maritimes, St. Pierre et Miquelon
- Canadian Forces 103 Search and Rescue Squadron, Gander
- Public Security and Emergency Preparedness
- RCMP
- 5th Canadian Rangers Patrol Group
- Town of St. Lawrence
