Aquaculture Science
The Federal Aquaculture
Development Strategy established the general framework
for industry development in an environmentally and economically sustainable fashion. As
the lead federal agency for aquaculture, we are committed
to working in partnership with stakeholders to facilitate the development of the
aquaculture industry in B.C.
Our world class science program supports
the Department's regulatory mandate as well as providing a sound science and technology
base for innovation. Serving as the base for our aquaculture program, the Pacific
Biological Station located on Vancouver Island was established in 1908 and offers a full
range of fresh and saltwater facilities including an experimental fish farm. The
Centre for Aquaculture and Environmental Research and our partner, the Pacific Institute for Aquatic Bioscience, are
also capable of a wide range of fresh and saltwater aquaculture research. Both facilities
offer state-of-the art technology as well as highly skilled professional staff. We have
active programs in the following areas:
Biotechnology and
Genetics · Fish Health Research
and Diagnostics · Microbiology · Marine Species Aquaculture · Nutrition ·
Shellfish Aquaculture Research
· Marine Algae Research
Aquaculture is an important sector of our
economy and its integration into a thoughtful coastal zone management process will be
beneficial to all Canadians. Working together in partnership, we can ensure aquaculture is
sustainable now and in the future. |
