Pelagic fish

Pelagic fish live in the water column, which distinguishes them from groundfish. They feed primarily in the surface layers or a short distance below the surface, and frequently travel in large schools, turning and manoevring in close formation.

This small fish, with its characteristic greenish glints, is of great commercial importance: in terms of quantities landed, the herring fishery is the leading fishery in the Gulf Region.

Mackerel are fast swimmers. Great schools of them come in close to the shore late in May, retiring back out to sea and the warmer waters of the continental shelf when autumn comes.

Bluefin tuna are great travellers of the high seas. Their Atlantic habitat extends from Labrador to Brazil. They are found in Canadian waters from June until early autumn.
