Organization Chart - Policy and Economics Branch

The Policy and Economics Branch works closely with the fishing industry to produce statistical information and analyses with a view to understanding and orienting fisheries management in the Gulf Region. To this end, the branch divides its tasks between statistical studies and economic analysis. It employs close to 30 persons.

Statistics Division

The Statistics Division conducts research aimed at determining, each year, the quantity and value of landings for each of the commercial fisheries operating in the Gulf Region. To that end, it collects purchase slips from processors in all three areas of the Region. Processing plants are also targeted for research, and the findings reveal the value of that industry's output. Lastly, the Division measures the fishing pressure to which the species found in the Gulf Region are being subjected by consulting fishers to obtain ship's log data and information on harvesting sites. This crucial information is important for the work of DFO's scientists and managers.

Research and Economics Division

One of the main functions of the Research and Economics Division is to develop and analyse options relating to fisheries management and the other services provided by the Department. The Division produces analyses aimed at identifying the challenges confronting the fishing industry in the Gulf Region. The profiles thus determined enable the Division to provide medium-term and long-term advice and recommendations in the field of fisheries and resource management.

The Division also produces costs and earnings analyses in order to evaluate the financial situation of the various fishing fleets. In addition, it advises federal agencies concerning the financial demands of assistance.

The Division carries out market analyses in order to determine supply and demand levels on international markets for the main fish species harvested in the Gulf.

The Research and Economics Division also designs and implements adjustment assistance programs relating to groundfish and Aboriginal fisheries.

Lastly, the Division plays an important role in policy development. In accordance with DFO's national strategy, it coordinates the preparation of the Department's main lines of action for the Gulf Region, including not only administrative matters, but also fisheries management.
