Multibeam echo sounders
This system measures the sea floor depth by transmitting a downward-looking fan-shaped beam, oriented perpendicular to the vessel track. The multibeam sonar measures depth contours with amazing accuracy. Since whole ridges are mapped, instead of a series of pinnacles, fisheries scientists have a much better idea of the habitat in specific areas.
