Selective
Fishing
Selective fishing is a strategy
that allows First Nations, commercial and recreational harvesters
to fish more abundant stocks while avoiding or
releasing unharmed less abundant species or stocks (bycatch),
including marine mammals and seabirds.
One of the main components
of Fisheries and Oceans’ conservation-based management strategy
is selective fishing, which represents a fundamental and permanent
change to the Pacific fishery for the benefit of present and
future generations.
Fishing opportunities
and resource allocation will be shaped by the ability of all
harvesters – First Nations, commercial and recreational – to
fish selectively.
