About Us

The Oceans and Habitat Sector is made up of two business lines: Oceans Management and Habitat Management.

Oceans Management

The objective of the Oceans Management business services is to achieve an integrated ecosystem-based approach to the conservation, protection and sustainable development of oceans and oceans resources. The objective, programs and priorities of the Oceans Business Line flow mostly from the Oceans Act and contribute directly to conservation, sustainable development and integrated management of Canada's estuarine, coastal and marine waters.

More information on the Oceans Management activities can be found here.

Fish Habitat Management

Mandate

The mandate of the Fish Habitat Management Program is to:

  • protect and conserve fish habitat in support of Canada's coastal and inland fisheries resources, and
  • conduct environmental assessments under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act prior to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans making regulatory decisions under certain provisions of the Fisheries Act, the Navigable Waters Protection Act and the National Energy Board Act.
Objective

The policy objective of the Fish Habitat Management Program is the Net Gain of habitat for Canada's fisheries resources: to increase the natural productive capacity of habitats for the nation's fisheries resources, to benefit present and future generations of Canadians.
