Canadian consumers demand that their farmed fish and seafood is fresh, wholesome and produced in an environmentally responsible way. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) works with many organizations to ensure that these high expectations are met.
There are challenges to farming fish and seafood, just as there are with any kind of land-based farming. Aquaculture emerged in Canada during the 1970s, a time marked by heightened public awareness of the potential impacts of industrial activity on the environment. Increased public scrutiny has made aquaculture better because it has ensured that both industry and government have taken action to reduce possible environmental impacts.
Environmental effects of aquaculture operations can be controlled to meet rigorous domestic and international environmental standards.
The Government of Canada, in collaboration with the provincial and territorial governments, sets policy and regulatory conditions to safeguard our marine and freshwater environments. Aquaculture operations must meet rigorous federal, provincial and international environmental standards. These standards, based on the best available scientific research, are in place to minimize and manage the risks associated with aquaculture operations.
