Thanks to the clear direction from Minister Hearn, and a lot hard work by Canada’s delegation, NAFO agreed to measures that will have a significant impact on the way fish stocks are managed in the Northwest Atlantic.Canada had firm objectives for concrete outcomes at this year’s annual meeting of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization. Canada was proposing changes to the NAFO Convention which would improve the organization’s decision making process, and hold members accountable for the actions of their fishing fleets. In addition, changes to NAFO’s enforcement measures were needed that would finally establish real penalties for serious violations of fishing regulations.
