Newfoundland Region Statistical Reports
Introduction
Please read the following information prior to viewing Newfoundland Region data on these pages
The Newfoundland Region of Fisheries & Oceans Canada compiles, interprets, audits and reports information on fishing activities in the Newfoundland Region obtained from a variety of sources within the fishing industry.
View
Catch, effort, landings and quota data is continually being audited, verified and revised as necessary. The Newfoundland Region links above provide preliminary data which is currently available on DFO information management systems, usually, as of the previous day's date.
Users should be aware that this data is subject to revision at any time.
Landings, catch and quota data will not always match one another for any number of reasons including (but not limited to); quota management cycles which are different from the calendar year cycle, hail information being used to report quotas prior to landings, different document types not yet reconciled with one another, delays in receiving documents from industry and regional work priorities being given to quota fisheries rather than species not under quota controls.
Currently available data may not reflect all fishing activities for the year-to-date. For example, landings information on a species for which there is no quota may not be current, as regional work priorities may be focussed on species subject to quota.
Data sources include:
DMP (Dockside Monitoring Program)
Independent verification of fish landed (species, weight, condition, area of capture, etc...) by vessel at the time of off-loading.
Hails
Daily reports of fishing activity and estimates, by species and area fished, received from vessels while at sea. Other types of hails include in-season weekly reports from buyers of amounts purchased for specified fisheries.
Logs
A required record completed by fishers which provides day to day fishing activity (such as estimates by species, area fished, amount of gear used and the time the gear was fished) for each fishing trip.
Purchase Slips
Receipts issued to fish harvesters by fish buyers for each landing. These provide information such as the species type, amount of catch purchased, price per unit, place landed, etc.
