Welcome to the Pacific Region
Oceans Program Home Page
With the passing of
Canadas Oceans Act
in 1997, Fisheries
and Oceans Canada made a commitment to develop a new approach to managing our oceans.
An important part of this legislation has been the introduction
of three principles - sustainable development, integrated management,
and precautionary approach - which we must strive to uphold.
One of the Department's responsibilities under the Oceans Act has
been to develop a National Oceans Strategy that provides an overall
strategic approach to oceans management. Click

Strategy.
In the Pacific
Region, an Oceans Directorate has been
established to co-ordinate and facilitate the Departments fulfilment of the
provisions put forth in the Oceans Act. The Pacific Region Oceans Directorate
manages three interconnected portfolios: Integrated Coastal Management, Marine Protected Areas, and Marine
Environmental Quality
