At-Sea Science Program

february 23, 2005

Description:

Science program realignment as well as refocusing of stock assessment and monitoring activities will provide the opportunity to consolidate science data collection on one less Canadian Coast Guard platform. This will result in the removal of one East coast fisheries research trawler (moving from 3 to 2).

Questions and Answers:

Q. What is this initiative?

This will eliminate one fisheries research trawler.

The science program on the East Coast will be delivered on one less Canadian Coast Guard platform, moving from three to two.

Q. Why is DFO taking this action?

The reduction in a number of science projects, especially the reduction in the monitoring and assessment of individual species means that there is a need for fewer science platforms.

There is also a need to reduce the expenditures of the At-Sea Science Program.

Q. What is the impact for Canadians?

This initiative will result in the Canadian taxpayer getting better value for their money since resources will be focused on high priority service delivery.
