Policy

The Policy Sector, through its five headquarters directorates and six regional Policy offices, provides support for the Minister and the department by:

  • Providing leadership in policy development and analysis - especially on broad horizontal issues - within DFO and within the federal government addressing departmental and government-wide needs and priorities;
  • Providing support to the Department by making advice and resources available in areas of policy development and economic and policy analysis, strategic planning, intergovernmental relations, legislative and regulatory matters and Cabinet and Parliamentary affairs;
  • In the Central & Arctic Region, the program is delivered through Policy Secretariat services to regional and national departmental managers and clients, by providing professional and effective policy planning, co-ordination and management services. The program supports national and regional initiatives and priorities consistent with national program objectives and ensures that regional circumstances are addressed. An important role is to identify and analyse issues that affect other regional programs, such as Canadian Coast Guard, Fisheries Management, Oceans, Science and Fish Habitat Management or the programs in other regions.

The Policy group is involved in a wide range of activities. Examples are:

  • Providing marine policy analysis to ensure a coordinated and integrated Policy/Coast Guard response to national and regional marine policy initiatives.
  • Providing an in-house source of economic expertise and an economic perspective on national and regional initiatives and issues.
  • Reporting of statistics on NWT and Nunavut fish and marine mammal harvest information and on regional freshwater commercial fisheries.
  • Supporting the development of the Oceans Management Strategy and Ocean's initiatives and in the Region.
  • Supporting the Office of Sustainable Aquaculture and the development of national freshwater aquaculture management framework.
  • Supporting the development of a national Freshwater Fisheries Strategy.
  • Supporting the Implementation of DFO's Sustainable Development Strategy.
