The Gully is the largest submarine canyon in eastern North America. Located off Nova Scotia near Sable Island, the Gully contains a rich diversity of marine habitats and species, including deep-sea corals and the northern bottlenose whale. The area is nationally and globally acknowledged as an important and exceptional marine habitat.

redfishThe Oceans Act provides Fisheries and Oceans Canada with the ability to establish Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in support of integrated management, providing additional legal protection for important marine species and habitats. The Gully has a long conservation history involving a variety of agencies and organizations. The Gully was designated a Marine Protected Area in May 2004, providing lasting and comprehensive protection for this important marine habitat.
