Team Canada Inc (TCI) is a network of federal departments and agencies working with the provinces and territories and with other partners to help Canadian companies succeed in world markets. Functioning as a "virtual" network, it provides the export community with a single point of access to the broad range of government export service providers.

Eligibility Criteria

Canadian businesses wishing to export or expand their international markets. TCI works with potential, prepared and active exporters.

Summary

TCI is a company's first stop en route to going global. TCI and its members offer a wide range of services including general information, skills development, export counselling, market entry support, export financing and in-market assistance. Some of their key tools and services are listed below.

Team Canada inc. Export Information Service: 1-888-811-1119 (see the document Team Canada inc. 1-888 Export Information Service. ExportSource offers information on everything from foreign markets, trade statistics and export financing to the logistics of delivery, trade shows, export missions and sources of assistance. ExportSource has been described as a "must" for exporters.

Regional Trade Networks

Companies, whether small or large, whether already established as exporters or only beginning to be interested in exporting, will have quick access to the products and services of all partners through Regional Trade Networks. The special expertise of all the partners will be pooled more effectively to meet the client's individual needs.

The networks offer a link to government services for:

  • leads on international opportunities and sales;
  • names of contacts at home and abroad;
  • specialized expertise on international markets and financing;
  • export counselling; and
  • export preparation and training services.

Virtual Trade Commissioner (VTC) (formerly WIN Exports ). The VTC is International Trade Canada's (ITCan) computerized database of Canadian exporters and their capabilities. It is used by the Trade Commissioner Service worldwide, as well as by TCI's partners in Canada to match Canadian exporters with international business opportunities. To register, visit the VTC's Web site.

Canadian Company Opportunities Database (see the document Canadian Company Capabilities. Connect to potential buyers, sellers and partners across Canada and around the world. Promote your Canadian company in both domestic and international markets. Register on line.

International Business Opportunities Centre (see the document International Business Opportunities Centre (IBOC) . This Centre has been established jointly by ITCan and Industry Canada (IC) to match business leads provided by Trade Commissioners abroad with business interests of capable Canadian firms, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises.

The Centre uses electronic databases such as ITCan's Virtual Trade Commissioner and IC's Canadian Company Capabilities, to search out and engage Canadian firms. If these databases prove insufficient, the IBOC engages a broad network of contacts in Industry Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, other federal and provincial departments, and industry associations in order to identify potential Canadian suppliers of products or services. Canadian companies are then contacted by the IBOC to determine which are interested in and capable of responding to specific business leads. Those Canadian companies that indicate an interest will be asked to contact the foreign buyers either directly or through the Trade Commissioner who originated the business lead.

International Trade Canada Regional Offices: International Trade Canada offices across Canada provide services to active exporters. They will link regional partners in international business development to our Trade Commissioner Service at Canadian Embassies and High Commissions abroad.

Trade Team Canada Sectors: Trade Team Canada Sectors (TTCS) have been established to strengthen links among all public and private stakeholders within a particular sector. The TTCS pool expertise from the federal and provincial governments, industry associations and private-sector companies, using this teamwork approach to pursue international business more effectively. The teams focus on international trade issues as well as on technology, investment and other issues that reflect our clients' priorities for conducting international business activities.

While the precise focus and organization of teams vary according to the nature of the sector that they represent, generally the teams:

  • develop sector strategies and action plans for Canada's International Business Strategy;
  • identify sources of supply in response to export leads and opportunities either delivered through the International Business Opportunities Centre or directly from the Canadian Trade Commissioners abroad;
  • help clients to get timely and relevant information on market conditions and export opportunities that match their interests;
  • update and upgrade the Virtual Trade Commissioner and other databases as key sourcing tools;
  • provide advice on current issues of importance to the sector (e.g., market access or investment), poll industry membership on the potential impacts of policy proposals, and respond to requests for other sectoral information.
