Marine Protected Areas!

Billy the Bass

Canada's oceans are home to an amazing variety of marine mammals, fish, and other creatures. Our oceans also contain important resources; we eat fish and other ocean creatures; we use oil and gas from under the ocean floor to power our cars and to heat our homes. We also use our oceans to ship goods from country to country.

All these activities are putting our oceans under increasing pressure. One of the tools we can use to balance these human activities and the needs of our environment are Marine Protected Areas. Marine Protected Areas, also called MPAs are special areas in the ocean that need to be protected. MPAs may be created to do one or more of the following:

  • Conserve and protect unique habitats
  • Protect endangered or threatened marine species and their habitats
  • Protect fish and marine mammals and their habitats
  • Conserve marine areas of high biodiversity
  • Protect any marine resource or habitat that needs special protection.
