Fish and seafood, wild and farmed, is the largest single food commodity exported by Canada. Canada is the fifth largest seafood exporter in the world.
National Production Figures
- In 2003, wild harvest and aquaculture production totaled over $2.9 billion.
- Farmed fish and seafood production was valued at $586 million in 2003, comprising approximately one fifth of all Canadian fisheries and aquaculture.
- Salmon is the predominant farmed species in Canada, producing 105,000 tonnes
in 2003, and generating $400 million.
- 95 percent of Canada’s farmed fish and seafood is exported to the United States.
