There are eight main species of marine and freshwater fish currently
being raised commercially across Canada. Salmon is the main marine fish
species farmed in Canada. Canada is the fourth largest producer of farmed
salmon in the world, following Norway, Chile and the United Kingdom. Canada
produces six per cent of the world’s salmon, accounting for nearly eight per
cent of the value. In 2004, salmon accounted for
two-thirds of total aquaculture production and three-quarters of its total
value ($387 million). British Columbia and New Brunswick produce about 75
per cent of Canada’s farmed Atlantic salmon.
Rainbow Trout is the most prevalent freshwater fish farmed in Canada (5,290 tonnes in 2003) and
is raised in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.
