Arctic Environment and Contaminants

The Arctic Environment and Contaminants section is comprised of the Arctic Contaminants program and the Arctic Marine Ecosystems program.

The Arctic Contaminants program is involved in a wide variety of contaminants related research in the Arctic, including fish and marine mammal studies. The Contaminants program operates a number of well-equipped analytical labs at the Freshwater Institute and has the technical capabilities to identify and measure heavy metals and natural and synthetic organic compounds, including chlorinated hydrocarbons, radionuclides, and petroleum and combustion-related hydrocarbons.

Arctic environment

The Arctic Marine Ecosystems program conducts research to determine the structure and function of marine food webs in the Canadian Arctic. The information produced by this research is an essential part of developing successful management and conservation plans for Arctic marine resources. In addition, this section conducts habitat impact related research in joint projects with habitat managers and resource user groups.
