Data Acquisition and New Products

The Data Acquisition and New Products Division conducts hydrographic surveys to update information on existing charts and to collect data for new charts. Single beam and multibeam echo sounding systems are used to determine water depth. The multibeam system gives full bottom coverage, and as such is used to examine shoal areas and to conduct large-scale surveys of critical areas such as channels and docking areas. The Division is also involved in the production of new charts from these surveys and the quality assurance of both survey data and charts.

A Tides, Currents and Water Levels unit operates a permanent network of 33 water level stations throughout the Great Lakes and the Arctic. The unit also installs temporary tide gauges, current meters and provides vertical datum information to support surveys and charting activities. The unit publishes a monthly Water Level Bulletin for the Great Lakes and provides input to Volume 4 (Arctic) of the Canadian Tide & Current Tables.
