Trophic Dynamics

Zebra Mussels

GLLFAS, in collaboration with Canadian and U.S. university researchers, and international, state and provincial agencies, conducts research on primary and secondary production to determine the effects of nutrient control strategies on ecosystem function. The whole of Great Lakes, such as Lakes Erie and Ontario, is often the scale of interest in these studies. Other research programs determine the distribution and abundance of recent invading species, such as gobies, Echinogammarus, Bythotrephes and Cercopagis, and the effects these invaders have on indigenous biota and altered energy/contaminants pathways. Once exotic invaders become firmly established it is critical to understand how these species will permanently alter the ecological health of the Great Lakes.
