OWEN ANNOUNCES $9.8
MILLION IN FEDERAL INVESTMENT FOR IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS VANCOUVER - Stephen Owen, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister of Parliament for Vancouver Quadra, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will provide funding totaling $9.8 million for a number of small craft harbour initiatives throughout British Columbia. “Harbours are key to the economic viability of Canadian fishing communities,” said Minister Owen. “This new funding will go a long way in ensuring that these harbours will serve the community’s needs for a long time to come.” Small Craft Harbours in Pacific Region will benefit from approximately $7 million planned for various projects including wharf, dolphin, float and gangway repairs, building repairs, environmental and fire safety initiatives and the provision of sanitary services. In addition, approximately $1 million will be invested in the areas of Central Coast, South Coast, Lower Fraser River and North Coast to carry out minor works at numerous harbours. Approximately $625,000 will be dedicated to harbour services, inspections and planning, plus support for local Harbour Authorities. The remainder of the funds, $1.2 million, will be used for delivery and implementation of projects. The projects are carried out under the Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Small Craft Harbours Program in collaboration with those Harbour Authorities that manage and operate facilities for the benefit of local users. This cooperation enables the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishing and resident coastal communities.
