ALCOCK ANNOUNCES FEDERAL FUNDING FOR HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS AT HECLA, MANITOBA

january 26, 2004

WINNIPEG -- The Honourable Reg Alcock, President of the Treasury Board, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the Government of Canada will extend the breakwater for the harbour in Hecla Village on Hecla Island, Manitoba.

"The proposed harbour improvements are vital to the commercial fishers,"said Minister Alcock. "The breakwater extension will provide protection to an area of the harbour that is currently exposed to strong winds thus enabling the harbour to accommodate more fishers and making it safer for them to berth their vessels."

This project involves the construction of a rubble mound breakwater off the tip of the existing steel sheet pile structure. This project will be completed during the upcoming winter months and will provide much needed protection to make the harbour basin safe.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada will carry out this project, under its Small Craft Harbours Program, in close collaboration with the Hecla Village Harbour Authority. The Harbour Authority volunteers, consisting of local fishers and other stakeholders, manage and operate the facilities. Such close co-operation with clients allows the Department to continue to provide an operable system of commercial fishing harbours and facilities throughout Canada.
