MITCHELL ANNOUNCES REHABILITATION OF THE DILLON’S COVE HARBOUR FACILITY

january 26, 2004

DILLON’S COVE – The Honourable Andy Mitchell, Member of Parliament for Parry Sound – Muskoka and Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, on behalf of the Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced that the federal government will invest in the reconstruction of the Dillon’s Cove harbour facility in Ontario as part of a transfer agreement with the Township of Carling.

"The Township has clearly demonstrated an interest in managing and developing the area’s waterfront assets for the benefit of the community," said Minister Mitchell. "This investment will ensure that the Township is able to continue with this focus for years to come."

The Dillon’s Cove harbour facility consists of a timber wharf, floating docks, a launching ramp, and 0.329 hectares of property. The wharf has been slowly deteriorating and has been unusable in its current condition due to low water levels over the years. The work will involve the partial demolition of the wharf to accommodate the addition of a new timber ramp leading to three new floating docks. It is anticipated that construction will be completed prior to the next boating season.

"We're pleased that this funding has been made available to improve the facilities," said Carling Township Reeve Mike Konoval. "Local residents will be delighted, and we'd like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Government of Canada for its assistance."

This project is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours Branch, under the Recreational Harbour Divestiture Program. Once the work is completed, it is anticipated that the harbour facility will be transferred to the Township of Carling.
