ALCOCK ANNOUNCES FEDERAL FUNDING FOR HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS AT HNAUSA, MANITOBA

february 24, 2004

WINNIPEG – The Honourable Reg Alcock, President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will extend the breakwater at the harbour in Hnausa, Manitoba.

"The breakwater extension will protect the harbour from south-east winds that have made most of this harbour unusable and unsafe," said Mr. Alcock. "This investment underlines the federal government’s commitment to provide safe and functional harbour facilities for the commercial fishers."

This project involves the construction of a 57 meter ell shaped rubble mound breakwater off the end of the existing steel sheet pile structure as well as the realignment of the channel. This project will be completed during the upcoming winter months.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada will carry out this project, under its Small Craft Harbours Program, in close collaboration with the Hnausa Harbour Authority. The Hnausa Harbour Authority volunteers, consisting of local fishers and other stakeholders, manage and operate the facilities. Such close co-operation with clients allows the Government of Canada to continue to provide an operable system of commercial fishing harbours and facilities throughout Canada.
