SYDNEY -- Mark Eyking, Member of Parliament for Sydney-Victoria, today announced on behalf of the Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the Government of Canada will provide funding for dredging at
Little River (Victoria County) in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
"This federal funding recognizes the importance of safe, efficient harbours for the prosperity
of the commercial fishery," said Mr. Eyking. "Our fishers and their community will both benefit from this federal investment in Little River."
Little River is a busy harbour, operating 9 months of the year and serving a home fleet of 30 vessels. The harbour basin has gradually infilled since it was last dredged in the mid-1990s, resulting in inadequate water depth and unsafe conditions for harbour users. Deeper water is necessary to ensure that fishers can safely navigate the harbour to off-load their catch and access the berthing facilities.
The project will be implemented by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the Harbour Authority of Little River – Victoria County, which manages and operates the facilities for local users. Such close cooperation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.
