JORDAN ANNOUNCES REPAIR WORK TO THE WESTPORT FACILITY

May 7, 2004

WESTPORT, ONTARIO – Joe Jordan, Member of Parliament for Leeds - Grenville, announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will invest in electrical upgrades to the Westport wharf in Ontario to facilitate transfer of the federal infrastructure to the Village of Westport.

"The Village is committed to the on-going operation and development of the site as a public harbour and is well-placed to benefit directly from the economic and social advantages generated by boating activity," said Mr. Jordan. "The transfer to the Village will ensure that control of this valuable public asset will remain in public hands."

The Westport facility consists of a fixed wharf and floating dock system adjacent to the island located at the foot of Spring Street on the Upper Rideau Lake and the Rideau Canal System. The existing electrical service does not meet the needs of the users and will be upgraded to a 400 amp service. It is anticipated that this project will be completed prior to the upcoming boating season.

This project is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours Branch, under the Recreational Harbour Divestiture Program. Once the work is completed, it is expected that the harbour facility will be transferred to the Village of Westport.
