PAUL STECKLE ANNOUNCES REHABILITATION OF THE SOUTH WHARF AT THE PORT ELGIN HARBOUR FACILITY

May 13, 2004

PORT ELGIN, ONTARIO – Paul Steckle, Member of Parliament for the constituency of Huron-Bruce, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will invest in the rehabilitation of the south wharf at the Small Craft Harbours facility in Port Elgin, Ontario.

"The harbour is of great importance to the community in Port Elgin," said Mr. Steckle. "The completion of the repair work will provide a safe marina and encourage tourism for the municipality."

The repair work will involve the rehabilitation of the south wharf deck that partially collapsed in the summer of 2003. This will include the demolition of the remaining concrete deck and the placement of a new concrete deck along the entire length of the south wharf. It is anticipated that the work will begin this spring.

This project is being undertaken by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours Program.
