Regan Appoints Canadian Commissioner to Great Lakes Fishery Commission

May 18, 2004

OTTAWA – The Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced the appointment of Robert E. Hecky, PhD, as a Canadian commissioner to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC). He replaces F. William H. Beamish, whose term expires June 30, 2004.

"I would like to thank Mr. Beamish for his valued service and dedication to the commission," said Minister Regan. "I am very pleased that Mr. Hecky has accepted my invitation to become a Canadian commissioner to the GLFC. His wealth of scientific knowledge and experience with freshwater fish in their habitat make him an ideal candidate for this position."

The Great Lakes Fishery Commission was established in 1955 by the Canada/U.S. Convention on Great Lakes Fisheries. It has two major responsibilities, the first of which is to develop coordinated programs of research in the Great Lakes, and, on the basis of the findings, to recommend measures which will permit the maximum sustained productivity of stocks of fish of common concern. Secondly, it must prepare and implement a program to eliminate or minimize sea lamprey populations in the Great Lakes.

Robert E. Hecky of Waterloo, Ontario is internationally recognized for his research on lakes and is the recipient of many prestigious awards from governments and professional societies, including an award from the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography for career achievement. Currently he is serving on the GLFC’s Board of Technical Experts, where he has organized a series of symposiums aimed at making comparisons among the world’s largest lakes.

The Great Lakes Fishery Commission is made up of eight Commissioners (four appointed from each the United States and Canada) and one U.S. Alternate Commissioner. In Canada, the commission’s program is managed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Sea Lamprey Control Institute of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
