BOB SPELLER ANNOUNCES REPAIR WORK AT THE PORT DOVER HARBOUR FACILITY

May 19, 2004

PORT DOVER, ONTARIO – The Honourable Bob Speller, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Member of Parliament for Haldimand-Norfolk-Brant, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will invest in safety-related repair work at the Small Craft Harbours commercial fishing facility in Port Dover, Ontario.

"This federal funding assistance demonstrates the government’s commitment to maintain a system of safe harbour facilities that enable fishermen and communities to make the most of their economic opportunities," said Mr. Speller.

The work involves various repairs to the fendering system, the electrical conduits, concrete repairs, and the stiffening of the pile bents of the outer two jetties closest to the Lynn River. It is anticipated that the work will begin this spring and continue throughout the boating season.

This project is being undertaken by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours Program in collaboration with the Port Dover Harbour Authority Corporation that manages and operates the facility for the benefit of local users. It is this close cooperation which enables the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishing.
