ST. DENIS ANNOUNCES WHARF REPAIRS AT THE PROVIDENCE BAY HARBOUR FACILITY

May 20, 2004

PROVIDENCE BAY, ONTARIO – Brent St. Denis, Member of Parliament for Algoma--Manitoulin, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will invest in wharf repairs at the Small Craft Harbours facility of Providence Bay on Manitoulin Island, Ontario.

"This project demonstrates the federal government’s commitment to the commercial fishermen of the Manitoulin Island area" said Mr. St. Denis.

The outer end of the wharf, approximately 30 metres in length, is primarily used by commercial fishermen and is in poor condition. The repair project will consist of reconstructing this section utilizing steel sheet piling and a new concrete deck. The plans and specifications are currently being finalized, targeting a tender call during the summer and project completion in the fall.

This project is being undertaken by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours Program, in collaboration with the commercial fishing industry of the area and the Municipality of Central Manitoulin.
