Taking Action Against Overfishing Remains High Priority of Government of Canada

September 24, 2004

OTTAWA – The Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, emphasized comments regarding overfishing that were made by Prime Minister Paul Martin at the United Nations this week.

"Canada is taking non-compliance and overfishing very seriously," said Minister Regan. "The Prime Minister has made it clear to nations around the world that the pillage of global fisheries resources must stop."

During his address to the United Nations, the Prime Minister outlined the need for a global oceans policy to allow for the rebuilding of fish stocks. He also stressed Canada’s objective for improved regulation of fisheries under international law to ensure the future sustainability of this important resource.

"Conservation is central to Canada’s response to overfishing," stressed Minister Regan. "International co-operation must put an end to overfishing or overfishing will put an end to the world’s fisheries."

The Government of Canada has made considerable investments this year as part of a new federal strategy against overfishing. Since March, $45 million has been committed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to expand aerial surveillance and at-sea patrols; to increase diplomatic interventions; and to forward Canada’s long-term agenda to change international fisheries governance.
