DFO TO LAUNCH THE ACADIAN FISHERIES IN NOVA SCOTIA - 400 YEARS PROUD IN WEST PUBNICO

July 8, 2004

Dartmouth, N.S. - The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Maritimes Region will launch its publication The Acadian Fisheries in Nova Scotia - 400 Years Proud on July 14th at the Musée Acadien and Archives in West Pubnico. The publication was created in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the French in Nova Scotia and the 2004 World Acadian Congress being held in Nova Scotia this summer.

"I am extremely pleased to be able to announce the launch of this publication," said the Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. "For the past 400 years, Acadians have had a significant role in the development of the fisheries in this region. The creation of this publication is in recognition of this work and was done in tribute to them."

The publication traces the role of Acadians in the development of the fisheries from the early explorers to modern times. It contains information, illustrations and photographs from various Acadian museums, community organizations and individuals from around the province. Some of the items displayed in the Musée acadien are used in the publication.

Ian Marshall, DFO Area Director for South West Nova Scotia, is pleased the launch will be held in Pubnico. "This area is home to some of the largest fisheries in the province and Acadians play a significant role in every one of them."

Members of the local community and tourists are welcome to attend the launch which will be held at 1 p.m. Afterward, tours of the museum will be available as well as demonstrations of traditional fisheries related crafts.
