Public Urged to Use Caution When Seals are Near Shore
At this time of year, it is not uncommon for seals to approach the shoreline, or wharves. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) would like to advise the public to exercise caution when seals are close to the shore. DFO would also like to remind the public that it is against the Marine Mammal Regulations to harass or disturb seals. Seals should be left alone and observed from a distance.
It is important to remember that seals are wild animals and they may become aggressive if they feel threatened. The public, especially children, are reminded that avoiding seals is the safest course of action.
Seals on shore will usually find their way back to water. However, if a seal is far from the shoreline where it could possibly be in danger or pose a threat to people in the area, please notify your local DFO office.
