NEW EDITION OF THE ST LAWRENCE ESTUARY NAUTICAL CHART FROM POINTE DES MONTS TO LES ESCOUMINS

Mont-Joli – The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS), Fisheries and Oceans Canada, unveiled today the new edition of the St. Lawrence Estuary nautical chart covering the area from Pointe des Monts to Les Escoumins.

The new edition of this chart (Number 1236) updates all information appearing on the previous version, including data on depths in open water and along wharfs, the positions and characteristics of buoys, underwater obstacles, topographical details and any other data of use to mariners. The chart incorporates data acquired with the help of multibeam echo sounders, in particular on approaches and channels leading to harbour installations, and marks wrecks newly discovered by CHS. Mariners should therefore buy the new edition, which will be kept updated by Notices to Mariners.

Nautical charts must be as precise as possible so that commercial shipping, professional fishers and pleasure boaters can navigate the St Lawrence River safely, thus facilitating economic activities dependent on marine transport (petroleum, wood, paper, iron, wheat, etc). The charts allow us to enhance our knowledge of the marine environment so that a sustainable development approach can be applied to its protection.

The mayors of Baie-Comeau, Forestville, Matane and Rimouski received framed versions of the chart to celebrate the maritime link that connects them.

The Canadian Hydrographic Service, whose regional office is located at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute in Mont-Joli, is responsible for charting navigable waters. It performs hydrographic surveys, makes tidal predictions, and publishes nautical charts, Sailing Directions, Tide Tables and Tidal Current Atlases. This year, the Service celebrates the 100th anniversary of its foundation.
