GROUNDFISH ICE FISHING ON THE
SAGUENAY
|
QUEBEC CITY
– Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Quebec
Region, would like to inform the public that the
groundfish ice fishing season on the Saguenay River
will open on January 17, 2005 and close on March 13,
2005. In accordance with the current regulations and
the scientific advices, each person is allowed to catch
a maximum of 5 groundfish per day of any type, with the
exception of Atlantic halibut which must be returned to
the water.
As the status of the
marine resources exploited in Saguenay continues to be
alarming the fishing season had to be reduced this
year. In order to ensure the sustainability of this
resource and to allow the continuity of this activity
in the future, fishermen must abide by the regulation
in force. There will be an increased monitoring by
fisheries officers.
On another issue, the
Coast Guard strongly recommends that pedestrians,
fishermen and snowmobilers leave the ice carefully when
they see an icebreaker in the immediate vicinity. The
ice may move, and this may create a real danger for
anyone in the area of the Coast Guard unit.
The Coast Guard spring
icebreaking operations on the Saguenay River will begin
on March 13, 2005.
